(Smart) Home Alone

When Home Alone was released in 1990, it became an instant classic. While it’s still a very-much beloved Christmas movie, what would happen if the movie was instead set in Bucks County, PA in 2024? Let’s just say it would be a lot different…

What if the power had been knocked out?

In 2024, The McCallister family may not have even missed their flight because they would have had an alarm clock on their iPhones. Let’s say that their phones weren’t fully charged when the power went off though and they ended up dying at some point in the night. If they had smart devices set up on their home network—such as a security system or smoke detectors—they could have been alerted to the outage while they slept. In that case, the movie would probably only last about 15 minutes.

Regardless, getting out of the house with over a dozen family members is tricky even without a power outage, so it’s entirely possible they could have left without Kevin.

What if the McCallisters got to the airport without Kevin?

Ignoring the fact that the days of breezing through airport security are long past us, the movie would have been a lot different if the McCallisters happened to get through TSA without Kevin in 2024.

  • They could have checked their security system to see if any zones were recently active to confirm Kevin was at home

  • If Kevin was not home, they could have located him with an AirTag

  • They could have set some parental controls on their Apple TV so that Kevin couldn’t have watched mobster movies, ordered him some healthy snacks on Instacart, or ordered an Uber to pick him up and bring him to a family member’s home

  • They could have noticed The Wet Bandits on their security cameras and notified the police.

A McCallister Smart Home would have made for a much less entertaining movie, but a better outcome in real life.
